We are in the business of selling. It is the staple of a healthy marketplace. Anyone can develop a sellable commodity, the successful businessperson is the one that can convince the buying public that their product or service is something they cannot or should not live without. And just like that a Coca-Cola or a Nike is born.

There is no nutritional need for carbonated water and sugar, yet Coca-Cola reigns supreme as the premiere beverage distributor in the world. Less than 1% of our population are professional athletes, then how is it that in 2008 Nike's worldwide sales has totaled $18.6 billion dollars?

Both companies sold the vision. They took a product that was otherwise fairly common and sold the idea that your life will forever be changed as a direct result of the use of their product. This is of course a huge generalization, however the message remains pertinent. To successfully market your product or service you must wrap it in a recognizable image and a consistent message. One that, as Coca-Cola demonstrates, is distinctive and stands the test of time.
